About the Curator

Djenabé is keen on creating space for imagination, preserving oral histories, and sparking conversations that examine contemporary perspectives of the Afro-Caribbean experience. The Toronto born Haitian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist and writer has organically emerged into the curatorial world through a unique collection of performance art activations, interactive installations and art exhibitions. Djenabé’s curatorial work is focused on the female gaze, identity, and Afro-Caribbean heritage. Fascinated with the timelessness of archived memories and mixed media, her approach to visual design poetically simplifies the complex nature of becoming. Djenabé is the Founder/Art Director of the arts collective Aquarius Mood; a Curation House cultivating community at the intersection of fashion, art & astrology.

About the Artwork

These self-portraits were realized between Sept 2020 and Feb 2021. They are part of my ongoing series, Chaos & Decay. I was struggling mentally and physically due to the pandemic. I felt defeated and I had a difficult time keeping myself together. And though I've healed over the last year, I still experience crippling moments of existential crisis. (Double exposures taken in camera, not overlaid)
I take an experimental and sometimes abstract approach to portrait and landscape photography, with an attempt to either appreciate the beauty in imperfection or completely reimagine our surroundings. I took a long hiatus from photography, but to help mentally cope with the COVID-19 pandemic , I needed a creative outlet. While my work is mostly personal, I do hope others are somewhat moved by the way I'm trying to see the world.

These works convey the exploration of identity through collaboration with those close around me.
Of Jamaican heritage, Dominique Burnside is a Brooklyn-born, Mississauga-based overall creative who works in a range of areas, from modelling to film photography to candle making. A recent graduate of Sheridan College, her work is an exploration through testing. Her images come from an urge to create, and her current works collectively live under the title, The Opulence of Narrative.

how it feels to love you is about the transition of being in love, fighting to hold on, to letting go and from there grieving the relationship to coming out of it on the other side stronger. it was inspired by the rise and fall of the first relationship i felt seen and protected in.
leyla jeyte is a somali-canadian visual artist based in toronto and mogadishu. her work examines the lived experiences of black women on issues such as mental health, identity, memory, history, and culture. leyla approaches her work with gentleness and nostalgia while aiming to create a quiet intimacy.

Safe Haven by Rianna Steiner

About the Artwork

Nature has always been a safe haven of sorts, particularly after something difficult or intense has happened. Nature has provided a space to slow down and process the difficulty so that I can move forward only with what I have learned, leaving behind the rest. These photos reflect the joy of release that came after two emotionally intense periods of my life.
Rianna is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in crochet pieces and film photography. Each discipline requires her to slow down which allows for more room to create with intention. She hopes that above all the viewer can feel the love that was put into the creation of each piece.

"Limbo/Still breathing" utilizes both analogue photography and digital video in diptych and triptych form. The work is part of an ongoing series made in North America and Europe (while living between Toronto and Berlin) over the course of multiple years exploring the complexity that comes with transitions, mourning, growth, prolonged periods of limbo, and the toll these states can take.
Adrian Dénommé is a multidisciplinary visual artist, based in Toronto, ON. Specializing in fine art photography, his work draws inspiration from elements of urbanism contextualized through people, weather, music, design and the balance we strive for within our relationship to city life. Adrian’s work has been commissioned by organizations across North America, has exhibited in Canada and the United States, and has been featured in publications in London, New York, Toronto and Vancouver.

These creatures travel realms, breaking the heavens to guide and protect the souls of fallen beings. As Flesh Eaters, Purifiers, Witnesses to suffering, and Overseers of the dead.
Based in London, UK, artist Tennessee Jones-Phillips (b. 1999, Toronto, Canada) intuitively employs scanography and assemblage to animate her self-taught practice. Jones abstracts her visage, creating reimagined self-portraits. She adopts an esoteric form through these simulacrums, ultimately denying the viewer her Black body, becoming a gatekeeper. Jones seeks to heal personal and ancestral traumas by creating works that redefine her knowledge of liminal worlds and her roles within them.
